WU ZHIYI, AMERICA, A Chinese photographer in America, Beijing 1999(Chinese Photography Press). Hard cover in slipcase 29 x 21 cm. Text in Chinese and English. Wu Zhiyi began his career as a photographer in 1979, working for the Chinese army. He first set foot in America in the mid-1990s on assignment for the newspaper China Daily. He took photographs on the streets of many cities. His mind-set at the time is very evident in the pictures of this book. Many of them were taken from a great distance (Wu recently described himself as “a sharpshooter”). His wonder at the open-mindedness of American society is conveyed in images of nudists on the beach, scantily dressed women, and couples hugging beneath a movie billboard. Each photograph is accompanied by a short caption that often emphasizes his reaction; for example, “Two sweethearts kissing in the sunset,” “Youngsters in odd clothes in the street,” and “The unique hairstyle of a black lady.” The Chinese Photobook, Parr/WassinkLundgren, page 289 ![]()

Text: 4 pages(forword in 4 languages), photographs 50 pages. Text in Japanese, German, Italian and English. Good copy. A pictorial report on the state of the young 'nation' , this work is strongly propagandistic, drawing on the vocabulary of German and Russian Constructivisme and New Objectivity - shots from above of repetitive forms and glowing, happy workers and farmers" See: The Chinese Photobook by Parr/WassinkLundgren, page 96
