CHROWSTON,C., KOSHASHIN The Hall collection of 19th Century Photographs of Japan, Alberta 2009. Soft cover 21,5 x 26,5 cm[oblong] 144 pag. with 144 photo's of which 97 full-page coloured.
CONTENT:
KOSHASHIN (“period photographs”) reveals this remarkable period in history when both Western and Japanese photographers including
  • Felice Beato
  • Raimund von Stillfried
  • Uchida Kuichi
  • Kusakabe Kimbei
developed a distinctive style of image-making. While the earliest photographs were documentary in nature, photography in Japan soon became a commercial enterprise. Photographs were produced for local sale, but also for the growing tourism and international trade market, and artists who once earned their living in the studios of Ukiyo-e painters and printmakers, now hand-coloured these new black and white photographs.
Some photographers followed the conventions and subject matter of the famed Ukiyo-e printmakers, depicting courtesans, actors and scenes of entertainment, while others tried to capture the changing face of the country. The works in this exhibition catalogue date from the early 1860s to the late 1890s, and are on loan from The Hall Collection in Edmonton.

Shimooka Renjo A Pioneer of Japanese Photography

Shimooka Renjo A Pioneer of Japanese Photography

Japan early photography

KAZUO, M. a.o., Shimooka Renjo A Pioneer of Japanese Photograhy, Tokyo 2014. Size: 25.7 x 18.2 cm. 233 pages with 246 photographs.
"Published in conjunction with the first major retrospective of Shimooka Renjo, held in Tokyo in 2014, this volume collects 246 of this important early Japanese photographer's works, dating from the late Edo period through the Taisho period. In addition to his many photographs, important examples of his work as a painter are introduced here for the first time. Fully translated into English, including all captions, new scholarly research and
reference texts, this book is an invaluable new resource for collectors, scholars, curators, libraries and anyone interested in the history of photography.
Shimooka Renjo (1823-1914) was a pioneer of photography in Japan, yet until recent years few photographs had been positively attributed to him and little information on his life and work has been available in English. He
also trained a number of important Japanese photographers including Yokoyama Matsusaburo, Esaki Reiji and Kamei Shiichi, contributing to the spread of photography in Japan.
Scholarly content in this book include articles by Morishige Kazuo (“The Life and Times of Shimooka Renjo"), Saito Takio (“Shimooka Renjo in Shimoda, Uraga and Yokohama"), Ishiguro Keisho (“Shimooka Renjo's Nude
Photography"), Sebastian Dobson (“The Photographer called `Unshin:' John Wilson"), Minami Miyuki (“The Painter Shimooka Renjo: His Technique as Seen in His Western Paintings") and Mitsui Keishi (“A Pioneer of Japanese Photography: Shimooka Renjo's Place in History"). Japanese-to-English translation by Alice Gordenker and Carol Morland.
The reference section contains an all-new, complete translation into English of Shashin Jireki, an account of Shimooka Renjo's life in his own words. Shimooka Renjo lived into his nineties and had dealings with foreign
missionaries including James Curtis Hepburn and James Hamilton Ballagh, as well as many of the major artists of his time, such as Takahashi Yuichi and Goseda Horyu.Published by Kokushokankokai Inc. under the supervision of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography."

CONTENT:
Sales catalogue of an exhibition held by Hazlitt, Gooden and Fox.

After 1854, when a Treaty of Peace and Amity was signed between Japan and the United States, foreign businessmen began to arrive in the once-sequestered island nation. Among them was a bank official from South Australia named John W. Henderson. He stayed in Japan for more than a decade and was interested enough in what he saw to collect photographs by professionals like Felice A. Beato, who had earlier worked in China and India. Henderson's cache of souvenir pictures, passed down through his family.

Some of the 75 photographs are of standard attractions like the Great Buddha at Kamakura; others are of Japanese ''types,'' from priests to labourers to geishas. Most interesting, though, is how the collection reveals an Asian culture on the edge of change. Pictures of Shinto shrines alternate with those of Western commercial buildings. Portraits of samurai hang near those of the Kobe Rowing Club, to which Henderson belonged. A shot of the severed head of a Japanese man executed for the assassination of British Army officers brings a range of social tensions to the fore.
In short, Henderson's pictures document a world that existed before a tourist industry romanticized it, and global politics coarsened it.

The Journey of

The Journey of "A good type"

Japan early photography

ODO,D., The Journey of "A good type", Cambridge(USA) 2015. Hard cover 26 x 22 cm. 125 pages with around 100 photographs.
"When Japan opened its doors to the West in the 1860s, delicately hand-tinted photographic prints of Japanese people and landscapes were among its earliest and most popular exports. Renowned European photographers Raimund von Stillfried and Felice Beato established studios in Japan in the 1860s; the work was soon taken up by their Japanese protégés and successors Uchida Kuichi, Kusakabe Kimbei, and others. Hundreds of these photographs, collected by travelers from the Boston area, were eventually donated to Harvard’s Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, where they were archived for their ethnographic content and as scientific evidence of an “exotic” culture.
In this elegant volume, visual anthropologist David Odo examines the Peabody’s collection of Japanese photographs and the ways in which such objects were produced, acquired, and circulated in the nineteenth century. His innovative study reveals the images’ shifting and contingent uses—from tourist souvenir to fine art print to anthropological “type” record—were framed by the desires and cultural preconceptions of makers and consumers alike. Understood as both images and objects, the prints embody complex issues of history, culture, representation, and exchange."
