The Waterhouse Albums

Early photography India

FALCONER, J.(ed.),The Waterhouse Albums. Central Indian Provinces, India 2009 (ISBN:  978-0-944142-84-4)Hard cover 27,5 x 24 cm. 264 pages with 120 photographs
""This volume presents, for the first time, the work and career of photographic pioneer James Waterhouse (1842-1922). From his early career in Central India in the 1860s, through to his technical achievements in Britain in the 1900s, this comprehensive account traces the career of an enigmatic figure devoted to the medium, acknowledged by his peers as “the father of photo-mechanical work”, yet who today remains unjustly neglected within the world of photography.Waterhouse was deputed to photograph rulers, tribes, communities and
archaeological subjects in the Central Provinces. Among the results, many of which are reproduced in this publication, are perhaps the first photographs of the Buddhist site of Sanchi, and a series of remarkable portraits from the court of the Begum of Bhopal, as well as of significant noblemen and groups in the area. The Waterhouse Albums also offers an essay on Waterhouse's indefatigable experiments with photographic processes and his crucial work at the Survey of India in Calcutta. Appendices include transcripts. "

India, oude fotografie

RAYNER, H. (with additonal notes by C. Worswick), Views in Kulu & Spiti Frith's Photo-Pictures - India series, Bath 2011. Soft cover[oblong] 21 x 30 cm. XVII & 48pages 45 photographs. ISBN 9781904289777.
" This book contains the entire Francis Frith & Co. 'Universal Series' of photographs of Kulu and Spiti that were made during late 1869 or early 1870. This set of 45 rare images are amongst the earliest bodies of photography produced of this region, and were originally taken to be marketed as individual prints. They have now all been assembled into one comprehensive work for the first time; with the inclusion of 2 additional, and previously unidentified, images from the series, that were not included in the Frith series catalogue, or widely marketed by them. Finely printed in full colour, nearly all the plates are reproduced here to the same size as the original prints (whole-plate or 61/2x81/2 in.).
It contains previously almost unseen views of the region, its landscape, architecture and people; and is both an important addition to the early photographic history of the Himalayas, and an invaluable pictorial resource for anyone interested in the early history of the Kulu and Spiti areas. Where three dreams cross.

Where three dreams cross.

India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Oude & moderne fotografie

OGG, K., Where three dreams cross. 150 Years of Photography from India, Pakistan and Bangladesh / 150 Jahre Fotografie aus Indien, Pakisian und Bangladesh, Göttingen 2010. Hard cover 17 x 23 cm. 375 pag. with around 200 photo's[old & modern].

From the days when the first Indian-run photographic studios were established in the 19th century, this exhibition tells the story of photography's development in the subcontinent. It encompasses social realism and reportage of key political moments in the 1940s, amateur snaps from the 1960s and street photography from the 1970s. Contemporary photographs reveal the reality of everyday life, while the recent digitalisation of image making accelerates its cross-over with fashion and film.
The catalogue arranges five themes with works selected from the last 150 years. The Portrait shows the evolution of self-representation; The Family explores close bonds and relationships through early hand-painted and contemporary portraits; The Body Politic charts political moments, movements and campaigns; The Performance focuses on the golden age of Bollywood, circus performers and artistic practices that engage with masquerade; while The Street looks at the built environment, social documentary and street photography.

Over 70 photographers including Pushpamala N., Rashid Rana, Dayanita Singh, Raghubir Singh, Umrao Singh Sher-Gil, Rashid Talukder, Ayesha Vellani and Munem Wasif are presented in the show, with works drawn from important collections of historic photography, including the influential Alkazi Collection, Delhi and the Drik Archive, Dhaka. They join many previously unseen images from private family archives, galleries, individuals and works by leading contemporary artists.
