HAY,J., On Big Flowery Hill A soldier's journal of a secret mission into occupied China 1942, Londen 2004. Softcover 17 x 26 cm. 87 pag met ca 40 zwart-wit foto's. "On Big Flowery Hill tells the story of a secret British commando mission into occupied China in 1942. The narration, with its detailed account of daily routines depicting the gradual decline of the mission's morale, health and military effectiveness is juxtaposed with the young soldier's discovery of China. The country's mysterious landscapes and unexpected magnificence are seen through his eyes and portrayed here in astonishing photographs and writing of intimate simplicity. More than a beautiful book, this is moving document of one man's story of war, conveyed with the eloquent power of authenticity."

SUCHOMEL, F. & SUCHOMELOVA, M., ...and the chinese cliffs emerged out of the mist. Perception and Image of China in early photographs, Prague 2011(publisher: Arbor Vitae // ISBN 978-80-86863-19-1). Hardcover 23,5 x 29 cm(oblong) 294 pages with around 200 hotographs. "The book introduces the reader to the topic of depictions of China, its inhabitants and life and customs in the 19th century in photographs and in illustrations in contemporary magazines and books. The essays follow up in detail the gradual transformation of this documentation in the usage of the new media of photography and the establishment of its role as a model for improving the recording of daily life and customs. The book deals at great length with the boom of photography in several Chinese open ports as well as in other important Chinese locations where, apart from views of the landscape and cities, posed images of local people were taken. Foreigners from Europe and America focused on the production of photographs but soon the first local photographers also started their own thriving photography studios. The authors also discuss the contemporary travel literature, mainly that which was available at the time in Central Europe. One part of the book is a comprehensive catalogue with detailed descriptions of 125 photographs from the collections of the Moravian natives Erwin Dubsky and Heinrich Wawra who visited China in the 1860s and 1870s and acquired important collections of Chinese albumin images in the local photographic studios from European and Chinese photographers. The book has an index of names and places and rich visual documentation accompanying individual chapters."

Foreword by J. Hersey and L. Carrington, introduction by Jonathan D. Spence, Sidney D. Gamble's China, 1917-1932. Photographs of the Land and Its People, United States 2000/ publisher: Alvin Rosenbaum. ISBN 9780874919165. Black and white photographic illustrations(70 full page photo's and 15 text photo's), 191 pages, folio, brown cloth boards with black & white photo illustration tipped on the upper boards, black lettering stamped direct on upper board, in a matching brown cloth covered folding portfolio with loop closure. In publisher's shippping box. Sidney D. Gamble (July 12, 1890 – 1968) was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, to David Berry and Mary Huggins Gamble; grandson of James Gamble, who, with William Procter, founded Procter & Gamble in 1837. He visited China for four extended periods, 1908, 1917–1919, 1924–27, and 1931–1932, doing Christian social work for the Y.M.C.A and conducting social surveys. He is now best known for his remarkable and extensive photographs of Peking and North China. In 1917, he joined the work of Princeton-in-Peking and the Peking YMCA where his Princeton friend John Stewart Burgess invited him to do the surveys which resulted in Peking: A Social Survey, which included more than fifty photographs. In 1919 Gamble was on hand to capture dramatic photographs of the May Fourth demonstrations. The motto of the May Fourth Movement, "To save China through science and democracy," and the missionary ideal of "Saving China through Christianity" for a time seemed to be united. Jonathan Spence concludes of Gamble that his "findings were open-minded, clear headed, methodologically intelligent (though not always beyond criticism by scholars of different views), startlingly imaginative, and -- when presented in photographic form -- vigorous, ebullient, unsentimental, and starkly, yet never cruelly, illustrative of the deep and real suffering that lay at the heart of China's long revolution."

Softcover 18 x 25,5 cm. 48 pag. met 41 sepia coloured photographs "From the black and white photographs there emerges a colorful image of traditional China, which was just then facing the impact of Western modernity. Fairs, picturesque New Year celebrations, half naked workers on the construction site, women treading carefully on their deformed feet - all this variety of senses appealed to the photographer. Joseph Skarbek photographed not only every day life but also the then little known historical monuments of Henan province, the heart of the Middle Kingdom, whose pictures emanate peace and melancholy."

Many of these images have never been seen outside China. They represent a veritable time machine of historical events which took place during the 20th century, ranging from images of the Boxer Rebellion through to the events of Tiananmen Square. The accompanying narrative text traces China's disintegration into civil and world war, Communist revolution, and its slow re-emergence as a military and economic power. " CONTENT:

CABOT,M.H., Vanished kingdoms. A woman explorer in Tibet, China & Mongolia 1921-1925. Hardback, oblong.190 pag. met veel zwart-wit foto's en een paar in kleur. Vanished Kingdoms is the story of Janet Elliott Wulsin who explored together with her husband remote corners of Western China, Inner Mongolia, and northwestern Tibet. Wulsin's story went largely untold until, after her death in 1963, her daughter, Mabel Cabot, found her mother's private letters and diaries. Cabot spent the next four years conducting research in the Harvard University Library and the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology to unravel her mother's fascinating story. They documented tribes people and sublime desert landscapes, and, most remarkably, were allowed to photograph the interior of several of the great Tibetan Buddhist lamaseries, including Choni, Kumbum and Labrang. Several dozen rare, hand-painted lantern slides survived and are reproduced here in color. The photographs from the Wulsin Expedition, are now in the collection of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University. (see also: AlLONSO, M.E.ed. China's inner frontier Photographs of the Wulsin Expedition to Northwest China in 1923. Cambridge, 1979).
