ADAM, H.C., Edward S. Curtis(1868-1952), Reprint 2012 Köln(ISBN: 978-3-8365-3928-9). Hardcover 31 x 24 cm. 191 pages with around 165 full-page photographs. Text in English. "For over thirty years, photographer Edward Sheriff Curtis (1868-1952) traveled the length and breadth of North America, seeking to record in words and images the traditional life of its vanishing indigenous inhabitants. Like a man possessed, he strove to realize his life's work, which culminated in the publication of his encyclopedia The North American Indian. In the end, this monumental work comprised twenty textual volumes and twenty portfolios with over 2000 illustrations. No other photographer has created a larger oeuvre on this theme, and it is Curtis, more than any other, who has crucially molded our conception of Native Americans. This book shows the photographer's most impressive pictures and vividly details his journey through life, which led him not only into the prairies but also into the film studios of Hollywood."

KAVANAGH,T.W., North American Indian Portraits Photographs from the Wanamaker expeditions 1908/1909/1913, Indiana 1996. Hard cover 23 x 31 cm. with around 90 full page photo's. CONTENT: The magnificent portraits of North American Indians collected in this volume were taken between the years 1908-13 on a series of three expeditions, sponsored by John Wanamaker, the department store magnate, and his son Rodman and led by Joseph Kossuth Dixon, a highly-skilled photographer and self-promoter. Unlike his better-known contemporary Edward Curtis, Dixon concentrated on portraiture and in so doing created an enduring collection of character studies. His subjects are not anonymous representatives of a time outside of history; they are living, breathing individuals, who can in most cases be identified. The Wanamaker expeditions had a political agenda; they were an attempt to save Indian culture from extinction by publicizing Indian history and thereby gaining citizenship for the members of the tribes in America. In 1908, the first expedition went to the Valley of the Little Bighorn in Montana, with the aim of making a movie version of Hiawatha with an all-Indian cast. The second expedition returned to the Valley, in 1909, for a meeting of what was expected to be the Last Great Indian Council. In 1913, Wanamaker sponsored the Expedition of Citizenship. This final expedition covering over 20,000 miles was undertaken in order to present the American flag, as a symbol of citizenship, to everyone of the 189 Indian tribes. The Indians were granted American citizenship in 1924 "

Johnson, T., Spirit capture Photographs from the National Museum of the American Indian, Washington 1998. Softcover 23 x 25 cm. 205 pag. met 200 foto's. CONTENT: Native Americans have been among the most popular subjects of photography since the invention of the medium more than 150 years ago. As cameras became more widely available during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, not only well-known photographers but also ethnologists, archaeologists, and social workers raced to document the continent's "vanishing" indigenous peoples. One of the era's most assiduous collectors of Native American objects and images was George Gustav Heye, whose vast collections now form the core of the holdings of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI). From early daguerreotypes to contemporary color slides, the nearly 90,000 works in the museum's Photo Archive offer a view of American Indian life throughout the Western Hemisphere that resonates with the tensions and anomalies of the encounter between Native and non-Native cultures. Spirit Capture brings together more than two hundred compelling images from the NMAI collection with essays from Native and non-Native historians, anthropologists, and curators.
